when is too early for a cel phone? Kids these days are getting cel phones before they graduate elementary school, Is that too early? Some parents like the idea of being able to get in touch with their children after school or at play-dates, others say you won’t be anyplace where an adult won’t be, and you can use THEIR phone. where do you stand on the topic?

I have an 8 year old and I unfortunately work 40 miles away from his school and from where we live. I think it is super convenient for him to have a cell phone simply for my piece of mind. He has a Kajeet phone (http://www.kajeet.com/kb) which allows parents control over when their child uses the cell phone. Kajeet phones also have GPS capability, which is very useful. He knows not to take the phone out at school so I think as long as parents set boundaries, having a phone is fine.
