At-Home Winter Workouts

Winter. Some places in the country have no problem with this season. Summer is warm. Winter is not as warm. When you go for a jog outside in January, you might need to wear a T-shirt instead of a tank top. Oh cry for you.

As a New Englander, I’m familiar with the panic that creeps in with the beginning of February. You’ve already been inside for two months straight. And there’s no end in sight. You get into the swing of your “drop 10 lbs” resolution and a snow storm hits. Under mounds of snow, your car is shaking its head. Not going anywhere for a while. The walls are closing in on you, so you might as well avert your eyes and stick your face in a container of fudge.

Gym memberships are great, but what do you do when the weather doesn’t permit the shlep? Simple. Turn on the TV.

Who knew that when I pay for my cable bill every month, I’m buying a gym membership. That must be why they charge so much! From 30-day weight loss challenges to 10-minute intense workouts, calming breathing techniques to yoga chill-outs, you can customize your exercise program. You can even invite celebrity fitness gurus into your home–Carmen Electra, Jillian Michaels, even the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.


Santa was very good to me this year, with tons of Wii fitness under the tree (either that or he was trying to tell me something…hmmm). With or without the balance board, the Wii is amazingly fun and really works your body. Check out Wii Fit Plus, with more cardio and floor exercises, as well as a nutrition journal; the new Yoga for Wii , Your Shape with Jenny McCarthy, with a camera that lets you know when you’re off in your form; and EA Sports Active for Wii, where you can personalize workouts. Or just have fun with balance games. My daughter loves watching me try to keep penguins on an teetering iceberg. I mean, really…when are penguins not fun.


If it’s good enough for Jane Fonda, it’s good enough for you. Armed with leotard and leg-warmers, I bopped through the late ‘80s/early ‘90s to hers and Kathy Smith’s workout tapes. And who could forget Tamilee Webb’s phenomenon Buns of Steel (I was lucky enough to help write her companion Defy Gravity Workout book). Two of today’s favorites are Lindsay Brin’s Postnatal Boot Camp with Moms Into Fitness and Gaiam’s Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss. Also any yoga DVD with Rodney Yee will get you in serious shape.

If you aren’t sure which ones to buy, visit the library or video rental store for sneak peeks. If you’re a Netflix member, their instant viewing section lets you watch fitness videos on your computer or TV.

Snow storm knocked the power out? If you can’t beat winter, join it. My husband almost had a heart attack the first time I stopped him on his way out to the driveway and told him I would shovel. Little did he know, I wasn’t just being helpful. I was being healthy. Shoveling is an incredible workout, burning almost 500 calories per hour.

Stay healthy. Stay sane. Who knew you could get all that from your TV?

  1. Fitness is important year round- but it is constancy that is the key. A great workout an hour or so a week may get your heart rate up, but to keep your body limber & supple, you must stretch everyday.
    Try a few minutes at a time with Yoga Emergency-the 12 Minute Workout. You can do a special routine just for tight legs or a sore back- or my favorite – tight HIPS!
    I made it, I do it & I stand behind it as a deceptively simple way to keep your body open and feeling great, in between the heavy lifting!
