Last week we posted a video showing two grown baseball announcers, Fox Sport’s Steve Berthiaume and Bob Brenly openly mocking a group of young sorority sisters from Arizona State’s Alpha Chi Omega sorority because they were taking selfies during the baseball game. They were actually taking selfies right after the announcers told the crowd of fans to take their selfies and post them to twitter as part of a fan photo contest, but the grown men felt the need to mock the young women anyway because clearly it made them feel better about themselves and let them assume that these young women would rather take selfies than enjoy a sporting event.. I’d also take a group of young sorority sisters taking selfies with their snacks over a group of frat boys getting drunk and being obnoxious any day, since we’re obviously dealing with stereotypes here.
After the video of the announcers went viral and they realized that the girls were, in fact, just having some fun at the game and taking selfies like they were asked to do, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Fox Sports offered the women tickets to another game, and the sorority responded in the best way possible, by asking the tickets to be donated to a domestic abuse shelter.
In a post to their facebook page the sorority writes;
Alpha Chi Omega at Arizona State University would like to thank the Arizona Diamondbacks and Fox Sports for reaching out to the chapter after last night’s game and subsequent media frenzy. We appreciate their generous offer of tickets to tonight’s game. However, instead of chapter members attending the game, we have asked the Diamondbacks and Fox Sports to provide tickets to a future game for families at A New Leaf, a local non-profit that helps support victims of domestic violence.
Today, October 1, marks the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. If everyone who viewed this statement took the time to make a donation in recognition of domestic violence awareness, which is Alpha Chi Omega’s national philanthropy, we would be so grateful! We are happy to have the opportunity to shed some positive light on such a sensitive subject. All proceeds will go directly to A New Leaf to help struggling Arizona families get back on their feet by providing housing, food, childcare and more. You can donate using the link below. We appreciate your support!
What an amazing way for those young women to take the attention they received and do something great with it. Well done, ladies.
