A nine year old girl is being hailed for her bravery by local Mahwah, NJ police and firefighters after she bravely jumped three floors to the arms of waiting police men after her condo building caught fire.
Sofya Doroshenko was home alone when the condo complex caught fire and quickly spread throughout the building. A kitchen fire at the apartment next door spread so quickly that Sofya couldn’t use the front door or the stairs to leave the complex because smoke and flames were blocking her exit. The quick thinking 9 year old was forced to stand on her 3rd floor balcony as she waited for emergency crews to arrive.
According to ABC7, Sofya was standing on her balcony as police arrived on the scene. Lt. Jeff Dino of the Mahwah Police Department said he and two other officers situated themselves under the balcony and just told Sofya to jump.
“She was the most confident brave little kid that I’ve ever met. She put complete faith in us and when she jumped back we caught her,” said Lt. Dino.
Sofya said that while she was scared, she knew that she had to jump saying “I didn’t know what to do and I just listened to them,” Sofya said. “I just jumped because it was no chance.”
