Barbie has gone through a lot of changes in the past, but this one definitely trumps them all.
The iconic doll has gotten a major makeover with a new line of tall, petite and curvy body types. The new line is supposed to reflect more ethnically and realistically diverse dolls as opposed to the blue-eyed, blonde haired, 18-inch waist dolls we’ve been seeing for years.
The new toys allow “the product line to be a better reflection of what girls see in the world around them,” says spokeswoman Michelle Chidoni.
“We believe we have a responsibility to girls and parents to reflect a broader view of beauty,” said Evelyn Mazzocco, senior vice president and global general manager of Barbie, in a company statement.
While I’m sure these new dolls are going to stir a lot of debate online, I for one think that we should just let Barbie be Barbie. We try so hard to teach our children acceptance yet here we are changing the way an icon has looked for the past fifty years.
