How To Get A Flat Belly? Fiber Up!

You want a flatter belly this swimsuit season? Then, get your 25-35 grams (children about 14 grams) of fiber daily to keep your digestive system running smoothly. By doing so, you eliminate waste and take advantage of all of the wonderful nutrients in your food. Remember to increase your fiber gradually (sometimes over several weeks) because your body needs time to adjust to added fiber in the diet; like anything, use common sense.

Remember the Water. When you increase your fiber intake, be sure to increase your fluids as well. Fiber pulls water into the intestines. Without adequate hydration, fiber can actually aggravate rather than alleviate constipation. So drink at least half your body weight in ounces per day (120 pounds=60 ounces) to help the added fiber move effortlessly on its way.

Try to include food that has about 2 grams of fiber per serving. One excellent way to include fiber into your diet is to add whole grain rice to a salad dish. Recently, I took part in a cooking event hosted by Mom Central and Uncle Ben’s rice to prepare some delightful summer salads/entrees using Uncle Ben’s Whole Grain Rice products. I’ve never used instant boil in bag rice in a salad recipe before so I was curious how it would turn out. I have to tell you, in addition to tasting amazing, I had to fight off my family for the last serving! Luckily, I won and enjoyed the last “bite” for lunch the next day.

Chicken, Rice Apple, Walnut Salad

Tasty Chicken, Rice, Apple, Walnut Summer Salad

 

Serves: 6
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Meal Occasion: Appetizer, Side Dish, Salad, Lunch, Dinner
Cuisine Type: American

Ingredients
2 bags UNCLE BEN’S® Boil-In-Bag Whole Grain Brown Rice
2 cups shredded skinless chicken breast cooked and cooled
2 medium green apples thinly sliced
1 cup red onion finely chopped (optional)
1/3 cup toasted walnuts coarsely chopped
2 Tbsp. fresh sage chopped
6 Tbsp. low-fat balsamic vinaigrette

Instructions
1. Prepare UNCLE BEN’S® Boil-in-Bag Whole Grain Brown Rice according to package directions. Let cool.
2. If chicken is not already cooked, grill in pan under medium-high heat until cooked through.
3. In a large bowl, toss together rice, chicken, green apple, red onion, walnuts and balsamic vinaigrette.
4. Garnish with fresh sage. Serve cold or room temperature.
