For all of us pet lovers out there, our kids aren’t the only ones we want to dress up for the Holidays! Halloween costumes for our dogs can be really fun but before you do, here are some helpful tips to make sure we are all safe and happy……….
Most importantly, make sure your dog doesn’t mind wearing the costume. Yes, some dogs actually love to be a “ham” but not all, so make sure you try the costume on BEFORE the big night and that he/she doesn’t seem distressed wearing it. If they do, please consider going with a festive bandana around the neck instead.
Take a closer look at your dogs costume and make sure it does not have any small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that he/she could choke on. Also, ill-fitting outfits can get twisted on external objects or your pet, leading to injury or your dog getting stuck. Make sure it fits properly and your pet can move about and use the bathroom.
Make sure NOTHING constricts your dog’s natural behaviors. Make sure nothing impedes their ability to hear, see, breath, bark/meow or again, the bathroom.
Remember, unless the treats are dog treats, make sure you keep the kiddie treats away from your dog. We all know chocolate especially dark chocolate can be very toxic for our furry friends. So keep an eye on what your dog is chewing on for the next few days!
Lastly, you may want to keep your dog in a separate room when Trick or Treaters come a knockin. Dogs can get overly stressed with all of the commotion and keeping them in a separate room will also keep your little furry ones from darting out the front door. If they do happen to run out or away make sure they are properly ID’d with a collar and tags and hopefully a micro chip as well.
