Homework Hell!!!!

What is going on with our kids homework these days? They say how far behind our children are compared to other countries, but are the children from other countries robots with no extra curricular activities? Holy cow, I am fed up with all of this! It didn’t just start, it started when my son was in first grade, kinder wasn’t finger-painting and naps either, but in first grade projects from hell started. Projects by the way that can only and I mean ONLY  be done by the parents! My husband and I often find ourselves up after bedtime for the kids, cutting, building and gluing way past our own bedtimes. Something people really don’t appreciate when they HAVE a full time job, plus some! God forbid if your child has any extra activities of their own that they actually enjoy! When do our kids get to be just KIDS? when do they get to just ride their bikes or hang out with friends or go exploring, or fight with their siblings over a game? I’m not kidding, there is a huge controversy over this issue and a wonderful book written about this topic called “The Case Against Homework” http://www.thecaseagainsthomework.com/excerpt.php#top The pressure our children feel is to say the least, overwhelming! My son, now in fifth grade with all 4’s (AKA A’s)  will go to bed at night and come to me an hour later saying he can’t sleep because he keeps thinking about his 3 projects due, yes 3! It’s crazy and harmful in more ways then we think.  If you are also in this situation, as I’m learning myself, you can do something about it. You can start with talking to your child’s teacher. In the book I mentioned above there are a lot of things that can be done to help.

  1. Hi Joy,

Please come join the other commenters at stophomework.com. There are a lot of parents (and teachers) who are as appalled at the state of education as you are and it’d be great for others to hear your views.

  2. Hi Joy,
I really feel you pain on this one. I graduated high school in 2004 and I can remember times as a fifth grader that I would just cry because I would sit down when I got home and start homework and I would be up well past bedtime still working. It was never ending and my mother would write me notes for the teacher to look at the next day. There is a light at the end of the tunnel though…when I got into high school the work load seems to lessen. I know that sounds really crazy but it did. I was in all advanced courses and I was dual enrolled in college and I had a lot less homework. I hope that as parents we can advocate for our children and make this right.
