McDonald’s To Ditch The Toys And Offer Books With Happy Meals Instead

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love this! From now until February 15th, any time you order a Happy Meal at McDonald’s, instead of getting a toy your child will get one of 4 books that the fast food chain is offering.

According to the LA Times, the book selections are the classic “Paddington” by Michael Bond and illustrated by R. W. Alley, while the other three all follow a Valentine’s Day theme. Books “Clark the Shark Takes Heart” by Bruce Hale and illustrated by Guy Francis;  “Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse!” by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond; and “Pete the Cat: Valentine’s Day Is Cool” by Kimberly and James Dean complete the book choices.

McDonald’s has teamed with literacy nonprofit group Reading is Fundamental and will also donate 100,000 books to the organization as well.  In a statement released by Carol H. Rasco, CEO and president of Reading is Fundamental, McDonald’s involvement in this initiative is crucial to getting books in the hands of young readers.

“Ensuring children have access to books has proven instrumental in combating illiteracy in children in the United States. Studies prove the simple act of reading a book to a child at bedtime has a direct impact on his or her educational growth and potential.”

This is the third year that McDonald’s has supported this initiative and will have donated more than 50 million books by the end of the year.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I, and I think my kids would much rather get a book in their Happy Meal than a cheap old plastic toy that ends up in my recycle bin or garbage can within minutes of it being opened.

What do you think Hot Moms? Do your kids like the toys or do you think they’d rather get a book?
