Mom Faces Jail Time For Letting Her 4-Year-Old Play Outside Unsupervised

Has the world really gone mad? That’s what some people are thinking as there’s a new report that says a mom is facing jail time just because she allowed her 4-year-old son play outside while being unsupervised.

According to Yahoo Parenting, Sacramento mom Sonra Hendren is facing charges of child neglect after two neighbors watched her son Tomahawk play by himself before going outside to ask him to go home (this all happened in a playground in a gated community, by the way). Here’s a little more:

While she was initially arrested for felony child endangerment and neglect, Hendren’s charges have been reduced to misdemeanors and she has been offered a reduced sentence of 30 days in jail and one year probation, but she rejected the offer and now faces a maximum penalty of six months in jail and three years probation, reports People.

“I just thought she would get a warning,” says one of the neighbors who called CPS, adding, “I’m not mad she has to do things now to teach her, because what if someone did take him?” For her part, Hendren says, “of course I love him, I do everything for him. I breastfed for 28 months. I cloth-diapered, you know, obviously I’m avoiding helicopter parenting.” Meanwhile Tomahawk, an “outdoors” boy, says, “I love her like 20 times—maybe a thousand.”

Ugh, honestly this sounds like an extreme story and a case of mind-your-own-business to the neighbors. I’m just letting my 8-year-old daughter cross the street alone in our neighborhood because I’m slowly letting go of my helicopter parenting ways (it’s hard, but I’m getting there!). Instead of putting the mom in jail, shouldn’t the neighbors work together as a community and keep a good eye on the kid while he’s playing outside? Isn’t that what people used to do several decades ago?

Tell us Hot Moms, what do you think? Is it now wrong to let our toddlers play outside in a playground by themselves? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
