When Motherhood Swallows Your Identity, Do This!

Life is precious but let’s face it, it can also be a grind and sometimes life needs to be about me.  Busy moms often liken themselves to hamsters on a wheel, just running mile after mile with no end in sight. That was me. I saw a friend make some changes in her life that truly made her seem reborn. So I made my own bucket list for the year and I couldn’t be more fulfilled. When motherhood swallows your identity, Do what you need to for yourself and do it NOW (you don’t have to do what I did :) !

#1 – I signed up to run the walt disney world princess half marathon with two amazing women. This was way outside of my comfort zone being that I hadn’t run more than a block in the ten years since I had kids! But I didn’t let that stop me. Nadia Carriere Child Mode and Audrey McClelland Mom Generations  who were in for the challenge with me and started training together virtually. Training was daunting at first for me, but I ran until I had to walk but kept at it. A few weeks in (yep I initially hated it) I began enjoying the process! It gave me a sense of purpose and the running community gave me a new sense of belonging. This was all mine and I loved it! But, I will admit without Nadia and Audrey’s support I am not sure what the end result would have been… But, now, I have this shiny new medal and feel proud to call myself a runner!

We stayed at the amazing Encantada Resort, and enjoyed the  ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex  where we registered, got our paperwork and check out the goods at the expo!. Depending on your previous race time, you are assigned a specific corral and Disney is quite organized with the registration process as each booth is also categorized by corral, which makes the wait time minimal.

The Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend, presented by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is one of the nation’s largest women-focused running events, featuring more than 49,000 runners from across the nation and more than 28 countries. 91.5% of the participants are female.

#2 – I got a treadmill. I’ve wanted one for years and finally made the move. Why? Treadmill running is the quickest most reliable workout for a busy mom. Even though the kids are in school, running became harder and harder as my “me time” is few and far between. Trying to run with friends and coordinate with someone else’s schedule is hard. I needed a steady routine that fit into my busy life. Enter the treadmill. (Cue angels signing.) My new favorite running partner is always available. It’s always happy to run at whatever pace I choose. It can push me when I need it to. It never cancels last minute. I can simulate hills from my living room. My treadmill syncs with my heart rate monitor so I can train in my ideal zone. It also connects with my iPad/iPhone and my favorite fitness apps and keeps track of my miles run and calories burned. Treadmill workouts allow me to veg out watching The Today Show or The Bachelor while I run! A fit momma is a better mama, hands down and for this mom my treadmill has become my sanity! (Which one did I get? I chose the BH S5Ti , which won best treadmill under $2500.)

#3 – I’m planning my first trip to Europe. At first glance you might think I took off on my own like “Eat, Pray, Love” or Under The Tuscan Sun, but this momma has different dreams. For years I had saved every frequent flyer mile and every hotel point possible. I became a credit card point Jeti and discovered which cards yield the most points, which could be cashed in for travel miles. I scrimped and saved and finally, this year, I have enough points to fly my entire family to Italy and stay for two weeks! I’m over the moon with joy and am having a blast planning this special trip.

#4 I am making my family eat really healthy! Well, let me rephrase that. We all had a discussion where I presented the idea that we would all go gluten free, not eat meat during the week and be dairy free. My 6 and 7 year old are convinced that they don’t want to eat chemicals and were on board. My husband took a little convincing, but he also choose to drop his cholesterol medicine so he would be able to be medicine free. This has been so amazing and liberating having everyone on the same plan!
