Sesame Street Introduces A New Character With Autism Named Julia

Yessssss. I love it when some of our favorite classic television programs can keep up with the times. Sesame Street has introduced a new character with autism named Julia. The street’s newest resident will be joining Elmo, Big Bird and the gang to help bring more public awareness and understanding for those with autism.

Featured in the new Sesame Workshop storybook We’re Amazing, 1,2,3, Julia loves play dates and is a typical kid who likes to make friends, just like anyone else.

“Children with autism are five times more likely to get bullied,” senior vice president of U.S. social impact, Dr. Jeanette Betancourt, told People Magazine in an interview. “And with one in 68 children having autism, that’s a lot of bullying. Our goal is to bring forth what all children share in common, not their differences. Children with autism share in the joy of playing and loving and being friends and being part of a group.”

What’s more, a new site,, is full of interactive resources for children ages 2 to 5 to enjoy — including online books, fun videos, and other takeaways that enhance autism awareness.

In my opinion, this is simply awesome as it is teaching both parents and children that we need to learn how to accept people from all walks of life, no matter what differences we have or struggles we deal with.

Rock on, Sesame Street.
