If you’re a fan of the television show ‘Nashville’ you noticed a big change on one of the show’s main characters recently. Clare Bowen, who plays Scarlett O’Connor on the hit show, recently chopped off her long, flowing locks of hair to an uber short and very cute pixie cut.
And why many people may have yelled at their television sets ‘why?!’ when Clare’s character showed up on screen with her new short cut – after all many of us would love to hair that long and full – Clare posted the touching and inspiring reason behind her drastic cut in a post on facebook.
In the post the actress reveals that as a child she was diagnosed with end stage nephroblastoma, which is a form of kidney cancer found most commonly in children. She speaks about growing up in a hospital surrounded by children just like her, who were all sick, ‘mostly bald, all tubed, taped, bandaged up and stitched back together.’
She said explained that it was a little girl who inspired her to make the drastic change, ‘I was really inspired when I heard a story about a little girl who said she couldn’t be a princess because she didn’t have long hair, and I wanted her, and others like her to know that’s not what makes a princess, or a warrior, or a superhero. It’s not what makes you beautiful either. It’s your insides that count… even if you happen to be missing half of them.’
She posted a beautiful picture of herself with her new haircut, with the caption ‘It’s Just Hair’ before writing her inspiring story.
Clare’s message at the end is that you should never judge another person based on their looks because you never know what battle their fighting. In a world of vapid celebrity stories I love that Clare did this and I love even more that she posted her reasoning behind it. Fans of the actress have been posting their own pictures featuring either their children who have lost their hair to cancer treatments or themselves to her facebook post, showing that she really has made a difference with her words.
