OMG, where was this teacher when I needed her back during my own school years? I’ll be the first to admit that I was a horrible math and science student (I know, that’s the absolute worst thing to say, considering all the effort schools are putting in for girls in STEM subjects) but I did have my talents in other areas. Still, I was a stinker at math just because I had a hard time sitting down and going through each equation step by painfully slow step.
Fortunately, third grade teacher Alycia Zimmerman thinks children can understand math better when it’s presented as a game so she came up with several math visualization techniques using lego bricks.
Here are some examples:
This one is my favorite and a technique I definitely plan on using with my daughter once we start getting into multiplication:
It all looks so simple, doesn’t it? Finally, we have an easy way to understand math, my Hot Mom friends.
She also uses legos to help explain mean, median and mode and can even show how square numbers work. Heck, I’m in my mid-thirties and I can definitely see how using colorful legos to map out equations is far more easier than doing it on paper. I love this idea!
