I have to admit, I don’t write a lot of late notes for my kids at school because I’m a stickler for being on time. I don’t like to be late and I especially don’t like my kids to be late, so this isn’t an issue I normally face.
Seth King is a dad from Salt Lake City and unfortunately he’s a bit too familiar with writing late notes for his 5 kids. It seems getting 5 kids up and ready for school on time is not without it’s challenges, so Seth decided to do something a little different than write the typical ‘please excuse my child for being tardy’ note. Seth has instead gotten very creative with his late notes, writing some doozies that are sure to raise a few eyebrows but cause a few laughs from teachers. Here’s an example of one of my favourites.
Seth has been documenting his tardy notes on the Instagram site Latenotes and tells TODAY why he began writing them in the first place. “I was getting bored with writing the same old excuse note, and it got to a point where I also wanted my kids to understand the shame they should be feeling for being tardy and putting on-time attendance at their school as a second-tier priority.”
King goes on to explain that his notes, while entertaining, have also taught his kids about respecting timelines and public shaming.
“I love my kids dearly, but I understand also that the world is sometimes a harsh place once you get out of that cocoon of adolescence,” King told TODAY Parents. “I think preparing them for a life of public shaming and consequences early on is probably a good thing. At the same time, I let them know that they’re loved, they’re cared for, and I’ve got their back.”
King says that his wife is also completely on board when it comes to the note writing and has even stepped in and contributed a few notes of her own when he’s out of town.
I think this is pretty funny, but that’s a lot of late notes! Hopefully the kids will soon realize that being on time is really important, especially for school!
