Why This Video Is Going Viral “Dear Dad, I’m Going To Be Called A Whore”

A photo was posted to facebook last night by a photographer that has caused so much controversy and commentary that the photographer first removed the picture and then subsequently removed her entire facebook page. This screen grab shows the picture, captioned by the photographer as ‘Peace on Earth’ and shows a family posing for a holiday picture with the mother and two daughters with tape covering their mouths, the young son showing how pleased he is by this giving the ‘thumbs up’ signal, and the father holding a sign that read ‘Peace on Earth’.

This is supposed to be a jokey Christmas card. Because Ha-ha, silencing women is SO FUNNY, yeah son, go ahead and give…

I don’t even have words for this picture. What message are we sending our young sons and daughters when we think it’s ok and funny to pose our girls like this? When we tell our sons that it’s ok to pose our girls like this, because ‘it’s all in good fun’ and they ‘didn’t mean anything by it’.  At no point is this picture funny or remotely humorous, and it’s very message is that women shouldn’t have a voice. No, I don’t see anything funny about this picture.
I know there are going to be lots of you who think that it was an innocent photo, taken to be funny during the holidays, and that everyone in the picture is on board so it’s ok. But before you make that comment, I urge you to watch this video was recently released by CARE in Norway titled ‘Dear Daddy’. In it’s caption on YouTube it states that one in three women will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, usually from a male partner.  We need to teach our sons to value women, and we need to teach our daughters that they’re worth being valued. Everyday.
Watch the video below, then come back and tell me if you still think this photo is funny.
