Navigating through the teenage years can be difficult. I remember being a teen and all the things I did and sometimes I wonder how my parents survived me and my two siblings (especially my sister – she really pushed her luck during those teen years!). I mean, teen hormones can turn your once loving and happy child into a veritable monster that you don’t even recognize. Teens will try to push your boundaries every chance they get, but sometimes we have to realize that the reason they’re doing it is because they’re not quite sure who they are yet. My oldest is thirteen now, and the girl who once loved dress up and hanging out with her family now would rather spend hours on end in her room (door shut, of course) scrolling through her instagram and snapchat feeds, texting her friends and watching The Vampire Diaries on Netflix. So far I think we’ve gotten lucky. She still brings home great grades, she still figure skates, and she still talks to me, even about important stuff, so if she were to come home and ask if she could dye her hair blue, I think I’d probably let her.
Because at the end of the day, there are really way worse things your teen could be doing to express themselves than dyeing their hair every colour of the rainbow.
