Being on facebook can be very distracting and a way to lose focus on your loved ones. In 2014, Claire Barnett did just that. While Claire, was on her cell phone her 2-year-old son, Joshua, was drowning in the pond.
The BBC says that, by the time the mum pulled him out, Joshua was already unconscious and later died at the hospital. Her Lawyer, while defending her said, “Any mother going about the house can be distracted by a telephone or a washing machine”.
But, neighbors say that in August of 2013, they had to call social services after Joshua was almost hit by a car while playing outside on the road by himself.
Barnett is now in jail for five years after admitting four counts of child cruelty at Hull Crown Court.
Judge Jeremy Richardson said to her, “your son died due to your neglectful conduct, I trust that you will never be allowed to have further unsupervised contact to any child. If you should have any further children, they will almost certainly be removed from you.”
