For those of you who obsessively read the Harry Potter books and then passed them to your children to obsessively read before obsessively watching each and every movie, there’s some bad news this morning. Alan Rickman, the British actor who portrayed unlikely hero Professor Severus Snape among many other memorable roles, passed away today at the age of 69 from cancer.
We just recently found ourselves falling down the Harry Potter rabbit hole in my house, having bought my eleven year old son the entire box set a few months ago. He devoured the books so I went out and bought him the box set of movies, and the entire family fell in love with the series. Rickman was always a joy to watch on the big screen as Snape (loving him and hating him) and the many other characters he created over his rather short film career.
If it’s not Harry Potter that makes you think of Rickman, you may remember him as villain Hans Gruber in the Die Hard movie, or maybe Love Actually, or any of the endless roles he played that he was amazing in. The loss of Professor Snape has definitely been felt across his Hogwarts world.
Potter author J.K. Rowling has shared her condolences on twitter this morning after learning of Rickman’s death.
There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman’s death. He was a magnificent actor & a wonderful man.

My thoughts are with Rima and the rest of Alan’s family. We have all lost a great talent. They have lost part of their hearts. — J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) January 14, 2016
