I’ll never forget being a new mom and taking my daughter to church for the first time. It was June and the church had the doors and windows open because they hadn’t turned on the air conditioning yet. She got fussy, so I took her to the back to walk her around a bit. Near the end of the service, a little old lady approached us. As she got closer, my smile grew wider as I anticipated her complimenting how cute my baby was.
But instead, she grabbed my daughter’s bare dangling foot and hissed at me. “This baby is freezing!” she spat. “Put some socks on her!”
Needless to say, she did not compliment me or my parenting that day and as a new, young mom, I was instantly horrified. It’s just too bad that I didn’t know back then about this little tradition in Scandinavia, where people aren’t so worried about babies getting cold.
