Here’s Why It Feels Weird When You Poke Inside Your Belly Button

Go on, try it

Have you ever wondered why certain things are they way they are? Like deep thought wondering if you’re the only person who has ever had your train of thought float off into weird areas? Like who was the first person to look at bread and wonder what it would taste like if you put it over the fire and made it crispy? And who came up with the word toast for that—because it’s pretty perfect. Or had your mind drift into wondering why eyebrows stop growing at the length they do. Or why it feels weird when you poke your belly button? Does it feel weird for everyone? Is there something wrong with my belly button?

I can seriously remember one of the first times I realized just how weird it felt to touch the inside of the belly button. I had always wondered if there was something wrong with mine that made it feel that way. I know when I was a child I had an umbilical hernia — could that be the reason?

Well, it turns out — like other of life’s biggest and strangest questions, it wasn’t just me. If you touch your belly button right now, right inside it, you’ll get a weird feeling.

I’ll wait.. try it.

OK, see, gross, right? Here’s why that happens.
