S.C. School Resource Officer Banned From School District After Assault On Female Student Goes Viral

A South Carolina high school resource officer is under investigation and banned from the school district after a vicious assault on a young female student was caught on cell phone video and has since gone viral.

The video, filmed at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, S.C. shows school resource officer and Richland County Sheriff’s deputy Ben Fields approaching the girl, who is said to be a junior at the school, and physically throwing her to the ground when she refused to leave the room after being asked.  The student was apparently disrupting class and was asked by the teacher and Vice Principal to leave the classroom before Fields was called in to have her removed. According to Today.com, the female student was charged with disturbing schools and was released to her parents.

Tony Robinson Jr. was a student in the classroom who filmed the assault and spoke to WLTX to explain what happened.  He explains that the girl in question had taken out a cell phone during class and as a result was asked to leave. Since she put her phone away and didn’t feel she did anything wrong she refused. After the teacher and a school administrator asked her to leave and she refused, the resource officer was brought in. Robinson says that as soon as he entered the room he began moving desks acting like ‘he could already tell what he was going to do’.  He says the Officer asked the girl numerous times to move when she replied that she didn’t even know who the officer was. He then said the assault began at that point, “I’ve never seen anything so nasty looking, so sick to the point that you know, other students are turning away, don’t know what to do, and are just scared for their lives. That’s supposed to be somebody that’s going to protect us. Not somebody that we need to be scare off, or afraid.”

The video, which I’ve attached below, has gone viral on facebook and twitter under the hashtag #AssaultAtSpringValleyHigh.

School officials are working with the Sheriff’s office and Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott has asked the FBI to conduct an independent investigation of the incident that he says he was “very disturbed” by the video.

A statement by the district superintendent read “Student safety is and always will be the District’s top priority. The District will not tolerate any actions that jeopardize the safety of our students. Pending the outcome of the investigation, the District has directed that the school resource officer not return to any school in the District.”

It’s obvious by the reactions of every other student in that classroom as well as the teacher that they were all scared of this officer and what he might do next. I can’t understand where a grown man can think that kind of force can be justified on a high school student or anyone especially given the fact that while she may have been defiant, she wasn’t physical or threatening at all?! Thankfully the entire assault was caught on camera and hopefully justice will be served.
