A 9 year old boy from the Toronto area is being applauded for his bravery after dialling 911 to report his mother for drinking and driving while he was in the car!

York Regional Police tweeted about the boy’s brave actions and released a statement to the press detailing what had happened. In the statment they said that the boy was travelling in the van with his mom when he dialed 911 originally, but didn’t speak.

“There was no voice contact, but there were sounds indicating the call was coming from a vehicle. The call taker phoned the mobile phone back and spoke to a boy that answered the phone. He told police that he was in a van with his mom, who was drinking and driving. The boy sounded scared, but was able to tell the call taker his name, that he was nine, where he was, the description of the van and where he lives. Eventually his mother got on the phone telling police that she had just one drink, that she was fine before hanging up the phone.”

Thankfully the police took the boy’s report seriously and were able to locate the van, which they pulled over.

The driver was taken #1 District Headquarters in Newmarket for a breath test where she blew more than twice the legal limit for alcohol and was subsequently charged with Impaired Driving and Over 80.

Twice the legal limit?!! No amount of alcohol is ok to drive but this woman clearly had didn’t have ‘just one drink’ and the boy was very smart and brave to call the police. He very well may have saved his own life and the lives of many others by doing what he did.

The boy was turned over to his father and the Children’s Aid Society was contacted.

Kudos to that boy who had the bravery to do what the police are calling an ‘unbelievable act of bravery’.
